Rochefort - Historical Background

Vestiges found in the underground caves show that the site was already occupied during the Iron Age. However, it was during the 12 th century, when the town became part of the earldom of Rochefort that it developed into a commercial centre under the protection of the feudal castle. It is the remains of the castle which now form one of the towns attractions for the visitor.
