Located on 2 rivers, the Meuse and Sambre, Namur was an ideal location for the earliest Roman settlerts in 10 BC.
Major construction took place in the 10th and 11th centuries with the earliest castle being constructed. This is where the city of today began, and was the beginnning of a major fortified citadel. Governed by the Spaniards, the Dutch, the Austrians, France under Louis iv and finally the Belgians (1830), the armed forttress has always been at the centre of Namur life.
